It is this preserved individual specimen that people associate with the name "blobfish," and it is the one that was voted the ugliest animal in a mascot contest held by the comedy/conservation troupe, the Ugly Animal Preservation Society, in 2013. Affectionately known as Mr Blobby, this blobfish resembles an inflatable character balloon that's lost a good amount of its helium. The best-known blobfish specimen was found by a research vessel, NORFANZ, in 2003 and is preserved at the Australian Museum. Blobfish, however, die at the air pressure levels at sea level, and, therefore, remain elusively underphotographed. Most specimens encountered by humans are dead ones discarded by deep-sea fishing trawlers that use nets to sweep up marine animals from the bottom of the ocean in an effort to catch edible fish. Thanks to that, it floats slightly above the floor of the ocean, where it waits for small crustaceans and other edible matter to pass by so it can suck them up for food.īecause blobfish are found only in a few areas of the world and at depths between 2,000 and 4,000 feet below the surface of the water, they are rarely encountered live. Instead, its body is jelly-like, with a density slightly lower than the water in which it lives. However, that doesn't mean that the blobfish just sinks to the ocean bottom. It has soft bones and few muscles and lacks a swim bladder, the gas-filled internal organ that allows most bony fish to control their ability to stay afloat in water. *shivers down my spine* well let the scientists decide how real it is :D i am still curious about it, it looks so ugly i can’t stop looking at it XD.The blobfish ( Psychrolutes marcidus) is a foot-long pink fish found in the deep waters off the coasts of Australia and New Zealand. (poor fish and bad human who did this *irony* and a joke even if it was a bad one ^^). i mean it even reminds of a human face with a potatoe nose and a bigmouth. Then you understand my first thought it looks fake. the picture i saw was this one i will paste the picture’s adress it looks weird.īut it can also be a real as i said in the first place :P. maybe just pure unluck or the fish is a fake. Like if some child have been playing with playdoo that is pink and made a face with eyes and a big potatoe nose. This may truly be a fish if i look at the fish taken when it is in the water but when it gets up it looks like it is a fake fish. Its not known whether this behavior is strategic of whether it is just a result of their ‘lazy’ nature. The Blob fish nesting habits are interesting as its not uncommon to find groups of Blob fish nesting together with one females eggs sometimes right next to another females. The female Blob fish lays thousands of eggs at once and unlike a lot of fish the Blob fish will actually stay with her eggs, floating above as usual of in some cases literally sitting on the eggs. The Blob fish will literally float in place waiting for a meal to come by with little or no effort exerted in hunting prey, this leads to in-frequent meals which works fine for the Blob fish as sustenance isn’t needed in a large level as the Blob fish devotes almost of its time to floating stationary, its because of this behavior that the Blob fish has been branded ‘lazy’. Scientific research has explained that the main diet of the Blob fish is that of sea urchins and mollusks. Blob fish out of water Blob fish out of waterĪs the Blob fish is comprised of a gelatinous substance they actually have no muscles at all and they just float in the same spot most of the time waiting for their next meal.
